Windows 10 File Explorer slow to create directories

After finally begin annoyed for the nth time; the resolution was easier then first expected.

The problem was that every time a new directory needed to be created, it took the longest time for the directory to appear. This could also impact deletion, but was not the triggering factor.

It turns out that it’s fekking “Privacy” settings for Quick access.

If it does just what it says, showing frequently used items in Quick access, then it should be fine to disable it.

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows + E) and Click on the View tab
  2. Click on Options on the right hand side
  3. On the General tab
  4. Uncheck both Privacy options
    • Show recently used files in Quick access
    • Show recently used folders in Quick access

File Explorer Folder Options with Privacy

Hard to refrain from speculating why this is something that just all of a sudden happened and not something that was a problem from the installation.

Of course all patches and upgrades have been applied that was made available, so could the introduced there too. And perhaps it’s not by mistake.

But we digress…

This resolved the issue immediately and seems to noticeably speed things up a bit.
